The Biological Mass Spectrometry Laboratory develops and applies advanced methods to improve the understanding of diseases, pathways, targets, and drug effects.

The laboratory provides a full proteomics and metabolomics infrastructure for the identification and quantification of proteins, small molecules and lipids.

The laboratory is centered around two high-resolution mass spectrometer coupled to liquid chromatography, one bidimensional gas chromatography mass spectrometry and one triple-quadrupole mass spectrometer. The laboratory is well equipped and has experience on the analysis of molecules from different matrices, i.e. from biomedical, environmental, food and many other fields. The laboratory offers also the data analysis, pathway analysis and omics data integration.

• Study the biochemistry using mass spectrometry techniques

• Apply advanced proteomics and metabolomics to improve the knowledge of diseases, pathways, targets and drug effects

• Develop and optimize experimental and computational techniques to support basic and clinical research needs

• Accelerate discovery in science by giving researchers access to cutting edge technologies in proteomics and metabolomics

• Collaborate with UPO scientists, external researchers and industries

The Biological Mass Spectrometry Lab is located at the Centre for Translational Research on Autoimmune and Allergic Diseases (CAAD) of the University of Piemonte Orientale, in Novara. The center includes multidisciplinary laboratory devoted to the study of several diseases. The lab is equipped with a micro and nano liquid chromatography coupled with an high resolution mass spectrometer (Sciex TripleTof 5600+) for proteomics analysis, with a UHPLC interfaced with an high resolution mass spectrometer (Thermo Orbitrap Q-Exactive plus) for the analysis of intact lipids and non volatile metabolites, a bi-dimensional (GCxGC) gas chromatographer couple to a TOF mass spectrometer (LECO Pegasus BT 4D) for the analysis of volatiles and volatilized metabolites, a bioinert liquid chromatography system for sample fractionation (Thermo Ultimate 3000) equipped with autosampler and fraction collector, an automated ELISA platform (Freedom EVO, Tecan), and general electrophoresis and 2-D electrophoresis equipments, systems for image acquisition and analysis (Gel Doc XR and ChemiDoc XRS).
